I
am Neo-Pagan
I am a neo-pagan spellcrafter on the solitary path. Quite a
mouthful, huh? Breaking it down into easy steps:
Neo-Pagan: I prefer this term to "pagan" because it better
reflects my beliefs, and because it usually provokes questions instead
of assumptions (many people incorrectly equate "pagan" with
"Wiccan"). As a neo-pagan I do not attempt to
reconstruct or follow ancient religions, and I make no claim to know any
"mystical secrets of the past". What I practice is a
modern creation: a set of religious beliefs, moral codes, practices,
rites and rituals inspired by old pagan practices and modern pagan
religions, and tailored to meet the realities of the modern day.
Like any other pagan path, neo-pagans differ widely in beliefs.
For example I am an atheist, while many neo-pagans are not.
Spellcrafter: Yes spells, as in witchcraft. I do sometimes
refer to myself as a witch. At heart witchcraft is a way of
connecting with nature and the world around us, and attempting to
"have our way" (more money, better health, love, etc.).
This is really no different than people praying in a church, just a
different method and mindset about how the universe works.
Solitary: This term is used by pagans to indicate that one does not
usually practice rites and rituals as part of a coven, but instead
prefers to practice their religion alone. Some
"solitaries" follow a specific tradition (a structured pagan
religion). Other, like me, research many pagan traditions, as well
as various world religions and assemble a "do-it-yourself"
religion. For example, Buddhism has greatly influenced my beliefs
and practices.
I don't currently have any good links on neo-paganism, so
please suggest some.
